Toronto community council says no to condos at Rail Deck Park site

– via BuzzBuzzNews

After months of heated debate about the future of the railway corridor between Bathurst Street and Blue Jays Way one thing is for certain — condos won’t be built on it anytime soon.

Today, Toronto and East York community council voted against a plan to build eight mixed-use towers on the site, which the city has been considering as a location for a sprawling 21 acre public park.

Urban planning consultancy R.E. Millward + Associates put together an application for the site for P.I.T.S. Developments Inc. in May, in what they called the “ORCA project.” The application calls for a 12.4-acre park, which would account for 58 per cent of the site, eight mixed-use buildings, and a possible GO station.

However, the city has been floating the idea of its own park for the entire corridor since 2016.

Both P.I.T.S. Developments Inc. and the City would have to purchase air rights from the Canadian National Railway Company and Toronto Terminals Railway for the space over the corridor, in order to make any plan a reality.

Now the matter will go to city council and — if councillors choose to uphold the community council’s decision — it could make its way to the Ontario Municipal Board, for a final verdict.
